Our 29th Season is here

August 17, 2017

Dear Friends,

We believe our 29th season will feature some of the most exciting work ever on our stages!

In October, the 2017-18 Theatre Series will include the beloved Jane Austen classic, "Sense and Sensibility", presented by Aquila Theatre Company.

In November, Queens Theatre will present "Frida Libre", a fascinating exploration of the life of Frida Kahlo, one of the most influential women in Latin American history, written by and starring Canadian-Colombian actress Flora Martínez. Ms. Martínez will perform the show in both Spanish and English on alternating nights.

Additional theatrical productions include Katori Hall’s internationally acclaimed "The Mountaintop" from L.A. Theatre Works, which takes place the night before the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr., and two world premiere plays, produced by Queens Theatre: "Jimmy and Carolyn" by James Walsh and "Brooklyn ’55" by Jeff Mandels. Both are funny, poignant new plays about complex family dynamics, and the choices people make as they strive to move ahead with their lives.

This season, Queens Theatre’s Dance Series includes electrifying performances from "Pilobolus"; the "Tango Fire" company of Buenos Aires; the return of "RIOULT Dance NY" featuring the exquisite work of Pascal Rioult; and "BODYTRAFFIC", recently named “the company of the future” in Dance Magazine’s“25 to Watch.”

The Family Series will feature five shows to delight children and parents alike, including "A Very Electric Christmas" from Lightwire Theater; "The Lightning Thief" from Theatreworks USA; "Doktor Kaboom’s Look Out! Science is Coming!", a science spectacular; and ArtsPower’s "From the Mixed Up Pages of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiller", based on the Newberry Medal-winning classic book about a girl’s magical overnight adventure at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

The Special Events in store this season include the return of some Queens Theatre favorites, as well as original productions. After astonishing audiences last year with their "Dia de los Muertos" ("Day of the Dead"), Calpulli Mexican Dance Company will bring it back again this year, for one performance only. Steve Solomon will bring his signature stories and humor back to Queens Theatre with "My Mother’s Italian, My Father’s Jewish and I’m Home for the Holidays". Queens Theatre is collaborating with producer Stephen DeAngelis for two special concert events, "Broadway Valentine" and "Broadway Kids", featuring some of New York City’s most talented performers. Also included as a special event will be Queens Theatre’s 3rd Annual "Latin Dance Fiesta". This year, the Fiesta will feature the music and dance of Spain, Argentina, the Dominican Republic and Brazil.

Titan Theatre Company, in residence at Queens Theatre for a fourth season, will present Shakespeare’s tragedy, Richard III; Dickens’ A Christmas Carol; Euripides’ Medea; and Shakespeare’s comedy, Much Ado About Nothing.

Queens Theatre has a proud history of developing new works of theater, and its New American Voices Reading Series will continue in 2017-18. All events in the Series are free.
